In a study of 124 women taking progestin, the National Academy of Science found evidence of hearing loss in women compared to those women who either took no hormone replacement therapy or were taking estrogen only. The study conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center concluded women should be tested for hearing problems to rule out any possible affects from this form of hormone replacement therapy.

Since hearing problems can affect quality of life, including family and business activities, he urged more hearing tests for women using this therapy.

"We feel this should be added to the list of possible side effects, so when a woman and her doctor make their decision she can weigh this," Frisina said, adding that it may be a particular concern for women who already have some hearing loss.
