California Los Angeles Complex Court annual seminar

California is one of the few states in the country that has courts solely devoted to handling the litigation of complex cases. While some states, such as New York, have business courts devoted to business-related disputes, California has certain courts set aside to deal with all types of complex litigation case. Complex cases can include class actions, mass torts, construction defect litigation and environmental cases. Paul Kiesel currently serves as the chair of the Los Angeles Superior Court's Complex Court's Bench and Bar Committee. On December 9, 2006, a unique seminar will be held at Southwestern Law School; participants include 10 of the judges from throughout the state who sit as complex litigation judges.

Participating in the program will be Judges Carolyn Kuhl, Victoria Chaney, Carl West, Peter Lichtman, Wendell Mortimer, Emilie Elias, Tony Mohr, Richard Kramer, David Velasquez and Ronald Sabraw. The program will be co-chaired by Paul Kiesel and James Robie. The program will focus on Electronic Discovery, Electronic Service of documents, a class action check-list and a primer on how complex case designations work and how Judicial Coordination Proceedings are undertaken in California.
