In a finding consistent with the Journal of American Medical Association Bausch & Lomb inc.'s recall of a popular contact lens solution in May appears to have stopped the spread of a serious eye infection. Researchers at the US Center for disease control and prevention were unable to find any infectious agent in the Bausch & Lomb solution but research is continuing. As of June 30, the researchers have identified 164 confirmed cases of Fusarium Keratitis. In 154, or 94% of these cases, the patience wore soft contact lenses. Personal injury cases have been brought around the country and many in California for damages associated with the use of the Bausch & Lomb ReNu with Moisture Loc solution.

We feel pretty confident that the outbreak is over," said CDC researcher Benjamin Park, who has studied the outbreak since the first reports of the infection in the U.S. in early March.

The rare but potentially blinding fungal infection prompted Bausch & Lomb to halt shipments of its ReNu with MoistureLoc lens solution to U.S. retailers in April.

Bausch issued a global recall of the solution in May and this month slashed its 2006 earnings forecast.

Clusters of infection were first reported in Singapore and Hong Kong this year, and the product was pulled from those markets in February.
