Whether you are an attorney who practices personal injury, lemon law or corporate counsel work this group of lawyers and judges is an amazing resource. The Inns of Court are a section of the Litigation Section of the Los Angeles County Bar and meet monthly at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. All lawyers are welcome. On June 4th the Inns invited Attorney Paul Kiesel, Jim Robie and Ronald Redcay to share their firm building experiences.
Cell Phone Car Accident Deaths

On July 1, 2008, Californians will no longer be permitted to drive while holding on and speaking into their cell phone units and those under 17 may NOT operate a cell phone at all. Both fall under and emergency exception should the use of a phone be required for emergency purposes. In an attempt to reduce the number of traffic accidents caused by drivers speaking on their cell phones the California Legislature has voted to limit the use of handsets, while operating a motor vehicle. A handset may only be used when dialing a number, but, thereafter, a driver may only use a hands free device or face a ticket. The Legislature actually passed this law 2 years ago but the grace period has now come to an end. At a time where the California Highway Patrol is operating at maximum saturation (80% of all officers are on duty over the 4th of July time frame) the new law will take effect. Hopefully this effort will produce a decline in driving injuries and deaths due to cell phone usage. Time will tell.
Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Paul Kiesel

California Bus Accident Leaves One Dead Many Others in critical condition

One woman was killed and 21 others injured, eight of them seriously, when a bus traveling from Culver City, California to Laughlin Nevada drifted off of Interstate 40 and onto the shoulder of the highway. The bus, operated by Royal American Tours & Charter of Glendale, was traveling approximately 70 mph left the active roadway and rolled over after encountering the soft dirt median on the side of the interstate. The incident is currently under investigation to determine why the bus driver was unable to control the vehicle. The scope of the personal injury losses was so large, for this small community in the Mojave Desert, that six military helicopters and nine emergency vehicles from a local military base had to assist in the response. When an incident such as this occurs it is important to preserve all of the physical evidence, at the scene, which will assist investigators in determining the speed of the vehicle at the time control was lost as well as determine what if any mechanical failures may have played a role in this tragic incident.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Paul Kiesel

Four Young Men Die in California Freeway Crash

Four people were killed in a horrific car crash Friday, April 11, which closed a freeway east of Los Angeles. The people who died were members of a church group and one member is still in critical condition.

The five young men were driving in a 1994 Toyota Camry when it went out of control, struck the center divider on the Pomona Freeway and rolled over. The crash occurred at around 10:45 a.m. Friday morning.

Three of the occupants were thrown from the vehicle, and one fell into the oncoming traffic lane. Two of the boys died at the scene while two other died at local hospitals.

The boys, along with three other cars, were driving to an ice skating rink for a youth group event. Two of the young men were 17-years-old, two were 18-years-old, and one was 21 years-old. The identities of the victims have not been released. At least two of the young men in the car were brothers, all were high school or college students, and the driver was a college student.

The freeway was shut down in both directions for hours, which caused huge backups in the region 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano
